Bountiful News Chiropractic Can Lower Your Blood Pressure

In a recent double-blind study, a chiropractic adjustment dramatically lowered high blood pressure in 25 patients.1

Study director George Bakris, MD, Director of the University of Chicago Hypertension Center, said, “This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination.”

The study involved 50 patients with early-stage high blood pressure, none of which received blood pressure medication during the trial. 25 subjects received a special procedure which realigned the Atlas vertebra and 25 subjects were treated with a bogus adjustment that was indistinguishable from the actual adjustment. (Since patients cannot feel the vertebra being moved they were unaware of which group they were in.)

X-rays verified that the procedure realigned the Atlas vertebra in the patients who received the legitimate procedure.

Eight weeks after the treatment, the patients who received the actual adjustment experienced an average drop in systolic pressure of 14 mm greater than the placebo group. The diastolic blood pressure drop was 8 mm Hg greater on average.

As with the vast majority of clinical trials which study chiropractic treatment, no negative side effects were observed.
